Applications for injection moulding

Plastic injection moulding is a versatile manufacturing process for producing just about any plastic part. Some examples of general industry applications are:

  • Housings for anything from HVAC systems such as water filter housings, to traffic light housings to casings for chemical dosing systems or power tool housings
  • Automotive interior parts such as dashboards, door panels, knobs and switches
  • Automotive exterior components such as mirror housings, light housings, bumpers
  • Cab interiors for off road vehicles, municipal trucks and agricultural machinery
  • Plastic components used in industrial machinery, equipment and tools
  • Plastic components for household appliances such as vacuum cleaners, food processors and coffee machines
  • Parts for sports equipment such as helmet shells, protective equipment, handles and grips
  • Containers, caps and closures for FMCG applications

Selecting the right material for plastic injection moulding your product is an important decision that will require careful consideration. The material you use will determine the aesthetics and functional properties of your product.

Commonly used polymers include:

  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Acrylonitrile Butadiene
  • Styrene (ABS)

Other options are PBT, PET, PC, PC-ABS, Nylon and PPO. These provide improved thermal properties and electrical, wear and solvent resistance. There are also high-performance polymers such as PPSU and PEEK.

Additives such as pigments, glass or carbon fibres can be added for strength and stainless-steel fibres for controlling electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radiofrequency interference (RFI) or coatings can be applied as part of the finishing process.

Our technical team will be able to advise you on the best and most cost-effective material for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

OGM manufactures plastic injection moulded components for automotive, industrial machinery, HVAC, appliances, off-road and municipal vehicles, sports equipment and FMCG manufacturers. Typical parts include housings, automotive interior and exterior components, cab interiors, machinery parts, appliance components, and containers, caps and closures.

OGM works with polystyrene (PS), PVC, polypropylene (PP), polyethylene (PE) and ABS as standard, along with PBT, PET, PC, PC-ABS, nylon and PPO for improved thermal, electrical and wear resistance, plus high-performance polymers such as PPSU and PEEK. Our technical team advises on the most cost-effective material for each project, including additives for strength (glass or carbon fibre) or EMI/RFI shielding (stainless-steel fibre).

Alongside conventional low- and high-volume plastic injection moulding, OGM offers over-moulding, insert moulding and multi-shot moulding. Design and prototyping, in-house tool manufacture, and component assembly and packing are also handled under one roof at both Oxford and South Wales sites.

Yes. OGM's toolroom uses the latest toolmaking technology, and 80% of the tooling we supply is made in the UK with short lead times, reducing dependence on offshore tool sourcing and giving customers a single point of accountability from design through to production.

OGM is ISO 9001:2015 certified for manufacturing, and also holds ISO 140001:2015 (medical) accreditations, with production systems operating on lean manufacturing principles for continuous improvement. With more than 60 years’ manufacturing experience, a dedicated project manager assigned to every project, 50 machines and a world-class cleanroom for applications that require it, our quality control is complemented by customised automation, robotic cells and vision systems to deliver efficiency, competitive pricing and reliable lead -times for every customer.

Yes. OGM has a purpose-built assembly and packaging area and can design packaging to your specification or work to an existing spec, using automated bagging or hand-packing depending on the product and volume.
