Rapid production injection mould tools
The production of plastic injection mould tooling can typically take up to four months, between the sign-off of a part design and delivery of the tooling. This can be especially true if engineering is offshored to the Far East, where problems of communication, culture and shipping can extend lead-times still further. An alternative is the use of aluminium bridge tooling, but these tools have a limited life and poor quality in high volume applications.
To resolve this challenge, we have invested in the latest hybrid additive manufacturing technology, which allows us to create hard steel plastic injection mould tools in just four weeks.
Our CNC hybrid metal additive manufacturing system combines advanced additive manufacturing, using direct metal laser sintering, with conventional CNC machining technologies in an single, integrated process. This is capable of producing plastic injection mould tooling quickly, consistently and to extremely high levels of accuracy.
The system produces the most significant time savings for complex mould features, such as the deep, narrow slots required to produce thin internal walls. It can also be used to create conformal cooling channels inside injection mould tool inserts, an approach that can significantly reduce manufacturing cycle time and improve the quality of complex injection moulded plastic parts.
To reduce lead-times still further, we have developed a unique combination of conventional subtractive CNC machining with additive manufacturing. The custom designed laser sintered mould core and cavity inserts are printed from a range of metals directly onto standard machined mould tool base parts.
The completed core and cavity components are then installed in a standard design of bolster, preassembled and ready for production. To accommodate a wide range of possible part designs, we have engineered a range of standard bolsters suitable for different sizes of components. The range can accommodate both simple two-part core and cavity designs and more complex components requiring moveable side cores. Complete customised solutions are also available using this system.
